The family and friends of Evelyn Loewen rejoice with Evie upon her entering into the nearer presence of her living Saviour on June 6, 2026.
Evie was born on April 27, 1960. She was full of life and energy and achieved many musical, academic and adventurous goals, to name a few.
From a young age, Evie discovered her love for playing the piano and put her heart and passion into her pieces which powerfully impacted others. Her music brought joy to many children she taught, leading them in worship with her guitar. Evie served as a musician and worship leader at First Baptist Church in Vancouver for nearly 30 years, touching the lives of many through her thoughtful contributions. She surrendered the gifts God had given to her, using them to minister to others in need, especially in the years she played the harp. Evie recorded solo albums of her harp music, each reflecting a chapter in her heritage of faith. Music was her joy and an outlet for her to express her heart and give glory to God.
Evie was always pursuing areas she wanted to grow in. Her love for learning made her a master teacher for young children. She put her heart and soul into making learning fun and meaningful, which she hoped would spur her students on to be lifelong learners themselves. She had just as much energy as her kindergarteners! Evie studied in Winnipeg at Mennonite Brethren Bible College and received her BA in music studies. She went on to UVIC to receive her professional teaching certificate and later completed her Master of Education from UBC. Evie began work on her doctorate, although illness prevented her from completing that. Evie thoroughly enjoyed taking courses at Regent to grow in her faith in God and be shaped by her learning.
Evie loved nature. Whether it was hiking a trail, camping, running a marathon or watching a sunset on Gabriola, she was led into worship of her Creator. Truly this was her Father’s world, and He was blessing her with his presence. She was always up for an adventure, especially riding the roller coasters at Disneyland. She loved the thrill and wanted to share all her thrills with family and friends.
Evie was diagnosed with neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer in Fall of 2007. Even with this diagnosis, she lived life to the full, realizing that each day was a gift from God. Evie’s lifelong friend and roommate, Sharon, gave sacrificially to care for Evie over many years and the family is so grateful for her. In Evie’s challenges, she lived out 1 Corinthians 13:7, “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” Evie was a gift to all of us and in many unique ways she left an impact on us for which we are forever grateful.
